Design Team Series - Jen's Personal Design Process

Hello YNS Fans! In case you missed it we kicked off a brand new Design Team series on the blog on Mondays. This time around we are talking about the design process.

Well, I'll be honest. I'm a "fly by the seat of my pants" kind of girl when it comes to designing so it's a bit hard to describe my process. But typically I have two different modes of operation when I sit down to create a project:

1. Pick my paper/colours and embellishments first and then my stamps OR
2. Pick my stamps and then pick my theme based on the image.

Here's an example of a card that I did where I chose my papers and embellishments first. Then I chose a stamp (Moving Elly) that would fit the theme of the papers and that I could colour with the colours in the papers. In terms of card design, I like to use sketches as a guide or in this case the paper with the chevrons was my starting point and I built the design from there.

Other times (like when we are giving our new release stamps to work with) I have a specific image to work with. I look at the image and then decide how I'd like to use it. For example, for this card I had to use the "Zina from Africa" stamp. First I coloured her and then I picked out some papers that accented the African theme and the image.

I hope this gives you a little bit of insight on how I start my design process. Stop by each and every month for the next several weeks for more tips.

Design Team Series - Julie's Personal Design Process

I am once again in the honorable position of kicking off a new design team series! Have you ever wanted to know more about our creative process? Well, now is your chance to learn each design team member’s personal design process!

Ahhhhh, the creative process. Some days it is all rainbows and others...

and other days it is a mess! Warning, the following photo may be scary for some.

This is what my desk looks like most of the time.

I know it is hard to believe from the picture above, but I am actually somewhat organized when it comes to the whole process. My crafting area is much bigger than just this desk. I frequently take my crafting on the road. I carpool to work so I craft in the car on the days I don't drive. Waiting for the kids is another great time to pull out markers and scissors. I try to take advantage of every minute to fit in crafting which means I need to be organized and plan ahead! Taking everything on the road though sometimes contributes to the mess. My markers are all disorganized in the photo because I quickly took out the ones that were in my travel bag and tossed them right on top.

Organization - For me, it starts with a design team assignment or challenge. I have a mini notebook that tracks everything and keeps me organized. I like to think over what I am going to make before I even get started.
Here is my latest handy dandy notebook. I usually have a page for each challenge etc. and if it is for new stamp sets than there are multiple pages. This book is great because it has a little pocket in the front to hold fussy cut images.

Inspiration – Inspiration can strike at any time and my notebook travels with me everywhere I go so I can jot down ideas. I don’t really keep up on the latest trends and I can’t even say that I am inspired by one thing more than another. It really is whatever happens to catch my attention and make me think “oooo, that would make a fun card”.

Can you guess what my inspiration was for this card?

Dies - Your Next Stamp - Puffy Cloud
, Raindrops from Rainy Day and square formed with Pinwheel Die.

If you said my children’s artwork you would be correct!

These paintings were done by my sons in art class at school.

Crafting - When it comes to actually putting together cards I would describe it as a colorful mess. I have found that I do best if I am making several cards at once. At the end there are always piles of paper, stamps, ink pads, etc. that I need to put away. I, errrr, enjoy looking at those piles for days. I am usually tired by the time I finish a card and ready to go to bed so those piles stay out until I craft again or can’t stand looking at them anymore.

Be sure to check back next Monday to find out more about Jen's crafting process!

Thanks for stopping by!

Hello! My name is Kerri Michaud and I’m a stay at home mom to 3 kiddos ages 7, 5, and 2! We currently live in Apopka, Florida which is just outside of Orlando. I got into stamping about 2 years ago after I had my first Stampin’ Up party. I was instantly hooked LOL! Before then I had dabbled in scrapbooking, crocheting, sewing, quilting, jewelry making, and whatever other crafty whims that came my way. I think I have found my true passion in stamping and card making though! I also LOVE to make altered items and little gift boxes, etc. I am soooo excited and honored to be part of the Senior DT for Your Next Stamp! I ADORE these darling images and just love working with Karen and the rest of the DT!

Hi my name is Peggy Toole and I am a stay at home mom to 3 great boys who are 11, 12 and 15 and have a wonderful husband who is very understanding about my stamping obsession! We live in the Shuswap, part of the Northern Okanagan in beautiful British Columbia. I have been stamping seriously now for about 3 years and love this hobby and all the wonderful people I've been lucky enough to meet so far! I am thrilled to be part of the Your Next Stamp design team and to be working with such talented women.

Hi everybody! My name is Maureen and I live in sunny Hawaii with my husband, 2 boys and 3 dogs. When I'm not paper crafting, you can find me reading, watching TV, or playing on the computer. I'm so excited to be designing for Your Next Stamp and I hope I can inspire you at least a little with what I create!

Angel Rivera

Angel Rivera
Designer
My name is Angel and I’ve been stamping for over 8 years! I also scrapbook from time to time, but prefer making cards or other little projects. I try to escape to my craft room as often as my 3 boys (ages 16, 12 and 10) and all of their extra activities allow! My husband of 19 years, Derek, is supportive of my crafty time because he knows it makes me happy. I also work full time with a wealth management company and am a licensed life and health insurance agent. I’m so excited to be working with Karen and ALL of the YNS crew!

Bonnie Kohane

Bonnie Kohane
Designer
I am a second generation SAHM, which i call SAHGM. ("G" for grandma). I have been watching my grandkids for 7 yrs. I am also going through a second generation of crafting, i have a scrapbook that is almost 60yrs old filled with all of my favorite memories. I've been featured in Stamper's Sampler..more of an artsy card magazine...but my style tends to be "cute". Card crafting isn't the only thing i like to do, if i am not working on cards, you'd see me working at my sewing machine, crocheting or trying any new craft technique out there.. i love a challenge..which brings me to say..i can't wait to see what you all create for the YNS challenges!

Brianna Loeffelbein

Brianna Loeffelbein
Designer
Hello my name is Brianna also know as Happy Scrapper in the crafting world. I am 26 years old, I am married to a wonderful supportive husband of four years and we have an amazing two year old son Jayden. We live in a small northen town called Brainerd which is located in the state of Minnesota. For the past 7 years, I have been working for our Local UPS Store as store manager and I just love it. When I am not working I am spending time with my family and friends and of course crafting! I have been passionate about crafting my entire life. My main love of course, is Paper Crafting, specifically card making. I also like to sew, bead and crochet and teach others how to show thier creative sides. I am so honored and privileged to be joining such and awesome group of ladies here at YNS, I can’t wait to get started and share all my creations with you!!

Deborah Anton

Deborah Anton
Designer
My name is Deborah Anton and I am a stay at home mom to 11 year old twin boys and a wife of 12 years to a patient, loving, and awesome Army Officer. I am originally from California but currently live in Tennessee. I keep pretty busy just on the home-front with my active boys playing different sports, moving every few years, and volunteering with the Army. But in the little "me" time I do get, I love to do anything crafty and hide in my craft room!! I started out 11 years ago designing and creating jewelry for 2 large retailers, which led me to having my own business; until 8 years ago when I met designer paper and glue. A new love relation began! I am so excited to be part of the YNS team and work alongside so many talented ladies!

Jen Roach

Jen Roach
Designer
My name is Jennifer and I live in Ontario, Canada with my husband and 3 year old daughter. I'm a scientist by day and a paper crafter by night ---or really just about any free time I have including my lunch breaks at work!!

I started out in paper crafting back in about 2002 when my Mom and I took a scrapbooking class together. A few years later I decided to give card making a try and it's been my passion ever since. I'm the world's slowest scrapbooker so the instant gratification of card making really won me over. Over the years I have used more and more stamping in my designs and I love learning and trying new techniques and styles.

I would probably define myself as a "scrappy stamper". I *LOVE* patterned paper and most of my cards have lots of it with added layered on embellishments and textures. My cards may not be easy to mail but boy are they pretty!!

Other than crafting, I love to play tennis as you can probably tell from my blog address:

Julie Elak

Julie Elak
Designer
Hi, I am Julie Elak, aka "The Last Minute Crafter". My days are kept busy working full time and running after my children. I use almost every free minute to craft, my purse is typically full of copics and a pari of scissors. I began stamping well over 10 years ago, but my love for paper crafting found renewed energy once I discovered the online community in 2009. I started a blog on a whim and am so happy I did. I have made many friendships and found so much support and encouragement on-line.

Laura Nehring

Laura Nehring
Designer
My name is Laura, and I am SO excited and honored to be joining the Your Next Stamp Team! I am a former preschool/kindergarten teacher, now stay at home mom to 3 energetic kiddos - 5 year old twin girls, and a 4 year old boy. I met my husband the year I graduated from highschool, and we've been together ever since. We are enjoying life in sunny southern California, where we were both born and raised.

I started scrapbooking in 2006 when I was pregnant with my girls, which led me to stamping and cardmaking a few years later. The point of no return was when I purchased my first Copic marker at a local scrapbook expo 2 years ago... now I'm hooked! I LOVE to color, and it's how I unwind at the end of a busy day! My card making style is fairly clean and simple... I like for the images to be the focus of my creations, so I don't do a lot of embellishing. In addition to Copics, I am also completely obsessed with Kraft Cardstock, and polka dots! I am really looking forward to being a part the YNS team!

Nicole Nastali

Nicole Nastali
Designer
Hi! I’m a former kindergarten teacher who is now a stay at home mom to my 2 little girls. My hubby is supportive of all my crafty pursuits and that says a lot about him because I love all kinds of crafts from making headbands, bows, & designing dresses to making party favors and now cards!! I am a newcomer on the stamping scene and have met so many wonderful crafting friends already thanks to the common joy of card making and coloring with Copic markers. I would color all day long if my family would let me…!! Lol! My favorite colors are the blue greens (affectionately called the BG’s) and I try to sneak them into every card I make!! I love to get crafty with my girls (ages 8 & 6) and let them color images right along side me. It’s a fun hobby for us all to share!! A sleepover stamp from YNS was one of my very first stamp purchases & I’ve been in love with Fhiona & friends ever since!! I’m thrilled to be joining the YNS Team with this group of fabulously talented ladies & I can’t wait to share my cards with you!!

Ruza Rebel

Ruza Rebel
Designer
I'm a former Administrative Assistant turned stay-at-home mom to a very special young lady. I've been crafting since I was a young child, and when I became a SAHM I turned to crafting to stay busy. Staying busy making cards, altering items, and just having fun with paper is an amazing hobby that I truly fell in love with. I'm very grateful that I have a husband that supports me, that my son loves seeing my creations as well, and my special young lady enjoys getting into my crafts. I truly love the challenge of making something beautiful with the various products available to the crafting industry. That is why I am super excited to share my projects featuring the amazing YNS Digital Stamps, and I look forward to seeing your creations as well!

Sheila Veitch

Sheila Veitch
Designer
I was borne and grew up in a small town Canada. I started paper crafting in the fall of 2007, when I saw a stamping catalogue one of my friends had laying around her home. I took one look through the catalogue and was so excited because I knew I had found my favorite hobby at last! Making Cards. I’m a natural born artist, I completed a graphic arts program in college and worked as an artist for several years a life time ago. I currently work as an office administrator in Toronto where I live with my dog Georgie. Though I absolutely love my job, this hobby is my creative outlet. I believe, the cards I make are like little works of art, expressed from the heart. I find that when I’m making a card for a specific person, I am thinking about that person through the whole process. And that in itself can be the gift.

Thanh Vo

Thanh Vo
Designer

I work full-time during the day and can be found in my little craftin' haven at night either sipping a cup of tea or a yummy martini! I'm a Design member for other fabulous companies as well, if you would like to learn more about me, please visit my blog. Take care and I look forward to creating with you!
